FIESTAS DE LA CRUZ

The Fiestas de la Cruz in the popular neighbourhood of Cerro arose from the celebrations of the Fiesta de la Santa Cruz organised and celebrated by the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz around May 3. This Brotherhood is erected in the Church of San Juan Bautista del Cerro, so the Fiesta de la Cruz is closely linked to this neighbourhood. Since 1991 this brotherhood processions the Virgen de los Remedios on the last day through the typical alleys of the Hill.

Perhaps the most characteristic and unique element is the tradition of the 'Santacruces' that the little ones take out, arranged on a wooden stretcher that is usually carried by four or six boys and girls, on which a cross is erected, adorned with flowers and some stamp of images from Egabre. Tradition dictates that they be rose petals and celindas forming an arch, the most used flowers. The Santacruces take to the streets a few days before May 3 and the children ask for 'a little alms for the Holy Cross', singing a popular song that says: 'Oh Mary, my Mother, oh consolation, heavenly. Protect us and guide us to the heavenly homeland'.

The most unruly ones, if the guardian accompanying the cross leaves them, they kick, throwing the petals to the ground and creating great sorrow in the group by shouting 'la parte la porra'. On the 3rd, a concentration is held in the Plaza Vieja that ends next to the Church of the hill and in which, after distributing cakes and chocolate, the prizes of the contest are delivered. In recent years, small steps have been incorporated into the parade, in the form of 'Little Holy Week', in which the little ones are initiated into the brotherhood fights, so deeply rooted in our city.
